Conservation Success Story

Established in 1975, Cotubanamá National Park (formerly East National Park) covers over 800 square kilometers of the Dominican Republic's southeastern coast. This protected area encompasses diverse ecosystems from dry tropical forests to pristine coral reefs.

The park is home to numerous endemic species, including the famous Bayahíbe Rose - the Dominican Republic's national flower - which grows nowhere else on Earth. The park's marine areas protect critical coral reef ecosystems and serve as nesting grounds for endangered sea turtles.

Saona Island, the park's crown jewel, represents one of the Caribbean's most pristine island ecosystems. Its beaches, mangroves, and coral reefs provide habitat for countless species while offering visitors a glimpse of untouched Caribbean paradise.

Through careful management and conservation efforts, the park continues to protect these irreplaceable natural treasures while providing sustainable eco-tourism opportunities that benefit local communities.
